Battle#5: The Dead of Winter, Northwest of Staritsa, December 29th, 1941

July, 28th 2007, 23H00 GMT.

The German army was frozen in place. Bitter cold and deep snow made the thinly-clad Wehrmacht dig in and fight first for warmth, then the Russians. The Siberians were well equipped for war in the snow, but the Soviet High Command still threw them piecemeal at the German strongpoints.

The much heralded Soviet winter counter-offensive was in fact a series of small-unit actions amongst the white and evergreen of the Russian winter. The raid on the crossroads northwest of Staritsa was just one of many.

Aftermath: To protect the critical crossroads, the Germans had cut a maze of trenchworks through the snow. If not in comfort, at least in cover, sentries peered into snowy distance. Deep silence. Then, the sound of tank engines. The white, boxy shapes of T-34s with their snowmen-like supporting troops emerged fromt he east heading straight for the crossroads. The Germans were momentarily stunned until their emplaced Panzers took the advancing tanks under fire.

The German infantry ran from one fire position to another. The Siberians advanced in line abreast, some clinging to the sides of the slewing T-34s. Within minutes it was over. The panzers had been destroyed by Russian infantry assault and a number of German troops had died. However, all the attacking T-34s were smoking and there no moving Siberians to be seen. The Germans were to learn that this by no means meant they were all dead. But, the Russians had been thrown back for another day.

 Battle#4: Burzevo-December 2nd, 1941

July, 21st 2007, 23H00 GMT.

The long waited operation, deamed Operation Typhoon, to take Moscow finally commenced in mid September. The Russians set up three defence lines infont of the Kremlin. The town of Burzevo was located dead smack of the first line where Russian troops were ill-equipped and had almost no military training. These troops would face the old Blitzkrieg seen in Operation Barbarossa. The Germans un-expectedly achieved a classic pinzer movement on the first defence line and quickly crushed it. Select pockets of Soviet infantry tried to make repeated counter-attacks by ill-trained NCO's, but to no avail. The Soviet high command re-organized the retreating forces into the second line. The German army quickly faced massive minefields in between the defence lines and struggled to push on while being fired upon by artillery.

Battle#3: Bald Hill, Leningrad -September 11th, 1941

July, 7th 2007, 23H00 GMT.

On 8 September 1941, a German division took Shlisselburg, an old fortress at the mouth of the Neva River a half dozen miles east of Leningrad, thereby cutting land contact between the city and the interior. By then, the Finnish army had regained territory it had lost on the Isthmus of Karelia as a result of the 1939-40 Winter War and stopped on the old boundary, the eastern terminus of which was a bare 12 miles north of Leningrad. On the 6th, Adolf Hitler had ordered Army Group North to build a solid front around the city and starve it, not into submission, but literally to death. The ensuing "blockade" resulted, in the months January to April 1942 alone, in a staggering number of civilian deaths, very likely exceeding the whole-war combined deaths from bombing in Germany and Japan.

Mighty Panzergrenadiere

Special Interviews before Battle 16 And After.

Russians

1- How long have you been Hq for the allied this campaign?

Wolf: Well I belive I took over about the 5th or 6th battle in. There was a lot of comotion early in the campaign with Chopper and later with Tvuk.

2- How was it when you got in charge? What was your first action?

Wolf: It was very unexpected and scary. I had never been anything higher than corporal before. My first action was to talk with most of the troops and see what their status was, and to set up weekly practice times.

3- What are the secrets to this peformance of the russians now? They made a great improvement in this campaign.

Wolf :Well I must say its threefold. 1. We do two weekly practices now, and people actually show up to atleast one. 2. We got Herrkries's company, which boosts our numbers. And 3. Before the HQ was rather rigid and wouldnt alternate tactics when something didnt work. Now the HQ is quick to respond to change and switch things up.

4- What do you expect for next battle?

Wolf: Another victory Stalin willing. I want to go out with a bang this campaign, my first commanding roll, would be good to win the last battle. Hopefully the Axis numbers and the Allied numbers will be high, so Ive got more targets.

5- Did you ever use those divisional and company comissars? Where they there really to kill people if they retreat?

Wolf: Well Pacifist managed to shoot some people in the back for not moving fast enough, most of the back shooting came from my shitty aiming skills -__-. Other than that most of the time you just had to yell at them.

6- What do you think was the most dificult part in your job as Hq?

Wolf: Trying to make people come to the practices. And being the bearer of bad news when someone messed up and had to get a battleban.

7- What did you fear most in the Axis division?

Wolf: Several things. 1. Dirceu’s tanking. 2. Reichwolf and Targetpracice’s airway strafing. 3. Dutch's company.

8- Did this campaign meet your expectations?

Wolf: Not quite, I wanted another friendly campaign, but it seems all Ive done this campaign is dodge angry people and try to sooth out problems.

9- Well if there are any last words you would like to say to your enemies in the axis here is the chance.

Wolf :Its been a great campaign, and I look forward to seeing you on the battlefield!

Thanks Very much to Wolf for giving us the pleasure of this interview.

Germans

1- How long have you been Hq for the axis this campaign?

Ahab: I was Axis HQ from the very start of the campaign

2- How was it when you got in charge? What was your first action?

Ahab: It was not to difficult to start off with as supriemebeing had done an outstanding job before me . difficulty's came after my second battle in command as our numbers started to get lower and lower .

3- What did you expect on the last battle?

Ahab: I was not sure what to expect lol, the allies were now a proffesional division who had kicked our ass for weeks now. it was either stand and fight them with all we could muster or roll over and let them win. but a draw in the last game was a really amazing job on both sides. really thrilling edge of your seat gameplay and i thank both divisions for one of the best battles in my online career.

4- What do you think was the most dificult in your job as Hq?

Ahab: Field commanding the division while actualy trying to play , it sucks when you have the minimap open fully trying to co-ordinate the troops and hold a flag at the same time. i also suck at practical work on the forums as im not clued up on technical stuff so my strats looked a tad shakey .

5- What did you fear most in the Allied division?

Ahab: There numbers, i knew that Axis had the skill to win but at the time didn't deserve to due to lack of numbers for trainings and battles. The allies were a very organised and dedicated army by halfway through the campaign..dunno if kriessy had anything to do with it lol.

6- Did this campaign meet your expectations?

Ahab: Yes it was a fantastic campaign full of all the thrills that the FH tourny guarentees, this was my third tour in FH and this campaign for me had to be the best.

7- What did you view as your greatest asset in the axis division?

Ahab: My CO's , dutch Metaxas Dirceu Commander and later on Chopper , then the dedicated players that were here week in week out..you know who you are . these assets to me are priceless .

8- What was most impressive to you this campaign?

Ahab : The maps, what a superb gang of chaps we have in the mapping team. these guys put in all there spare time to produce top quality maps every week for us to enjoy' keep up the good work boys.

9- Will you persue a command role next campaign?

Ahab : Mabe mabe not lol , i will go were im needed and can help the best. if its a top spot or just a grunt ..ill give it the best of my ability.

10- Any last comments to the allied division?

Ahab : Well played guys , you really gave us hell for a long time and its a shame for you that at the end you couldnt squeeze a win. mabe next campaign will be an all out allied victory.

Report after Battle 16

The fate of the eastern world comes to a crescendo today. The Soviet army has advanced far across their homeland, pushing into Germany. Darkness has fallen across the land in this twilight hour. Pain and suffering plague the world, yet nothing can be done but fight. Hatred is stronger than love, stronger than sorrow, stronger than any other emotion. The Soviets and Germans have become beings ruled by hate, war gods in their own right. The fury of a million deaths is about to be cast out upon the land, at this last great struggle. Fire and fury like no other will rage across the land, turning men into ash, steel into ruin, and earth into wasteland. Tonight the final chapter will be written.

Both armies have set up observation posts near the others main camp. The Soviets have taken the high ground with an array of tents. The Germans claim a small town to the east of the Soviet main force. As the sun sets and lights up the sky a blood red tint it sends a signal to both armies. The men of both sides roar out in search of blood, and revenge. They hit head to head on a small hill in the center of the field, hurtling over barricades at each other in their lust for blood. Hot lead shrieks across the land and finds willing purchase in warm flesh. Blood spurts from severed arteries, staining the ground below. The Germans with their superior mp40s manage to push the Soviets back in the initial rush however.

...

On the western front the Soviets capture a lookout post, meeting little resistance from the Germans. However, the defenders are forced to hunker in blasted out craters and trenches as bombardment commences from the German victors at the hill to the east. The position quickly becomes a quagmire of blood and mud. The men at this position close their eyes and pray for deliverance.

Their earlier pushes thwarted the Soviets push into the German held village. Sweeping aside the light defense they quickly occupy the town. This village becomes a key staging ground for Soviet advances.

...

However the Germans, despite their early advances are still to face the fury of the Soviets. Huge suicidal rushes up the slopes of the hill swamp the German defenses. Soviets pour into the area, hiding amongst the bushes. German reinforcements funnel in from a nearby destroyed hamlet. The hill once more turns into a bloodbath. Cannons boom out, tossing men into the air, only to land as crumpled corpses. Bitterly the Soviets and Germans fight for this same barren piece of earth, shedding immense blood over one stupid hill. It is in constant dispute as to who really controls the hill, all that matters is the rivers of blood that flow down its now red sides.

Both armies grind to a halt after several hours of fighting. Countless men have died in pursuit of a meaningless patch of land. The last rays of the sun are quickly fading and both armies withdraw. A stalemate is all that is left for both sides. In the long run however, the Germans have stopped the Soviet counterattack, and both sides call an uneasy truce. A Soviet general stands atop a building in the small village looking out across the land as the last rays of the sun disappear from view. Winds slowly swirl the air around him, and leaves tumble by without a care in the world. They are not the only things the wind is moving, spirits are uplifted, soaring towards a heavenly destination. A small chuckle at first, it soon blossoms into a uncontrollable laugh. Both armies are swept up in it, and the sound of laughter booms through the valley. The war has ended, the men are free from the death, free from the slaughter, and free from all fear. Darkness lifts from men’s spirits as they will soon go home to rebuild their lives. The German general and the Soviet general shake hands one last time, and turn to their men. Finally it is time to go home, time for an end to the suffering, to the pain, to the fear. Hearty grins break out, and the winds continue to blow…always the winds of change blow…casting us into the future, and beyond…

From 1943 to 1945

Nothing could stop the Soviet red tide, not even Hitlers favorite divison Grossdeutschland Division. Battles were fought from Crimea and even fell into Hungary and Romania. The most fierce battles were fought at the river Dnieper, to Warsaw, and all the way to Berlin. The Great Patriotic War lasted from 1941 with Operation Barbarossa and ended in 1945 at the Battle for Berlin. The war cost the Germans dearly with 4,300,000 dead and the Soviets with 10,600,000 dead. In the near future we will re-visit the Eastern Front to fight these brutal battles and you will be able to choose the course of the Eastern Front.

Last stand for the germans!

Report after Battle 15

Flying across the highlands, soaring on wings of fury the onslaught of the Soviet war machine rumbles onwards towards Berlin. Rising high above the mountains, reaching for the sky the Soviets push into the area of farmland, unaware of the death that stalks the land. After initial camps have been set up reports come in about the German encampment just over the next ridge. In the German base shouts of surprise and anger fill the air over the Soviet invaders. Tanks are revved up, gas and ammo distributed as the Germans prepare to throw the Soviets back.

Clouds of dust are thrown into the air as German tanks pour from their base. The Soviets who have taken a hill close by are caught off guard, and though they fight bravely are overrun. Bitter fighting ensues in the rubble, as the defenders prepare to fall back to their river stronghold. With a grim look back the survivors retreat to the bridge of sorrows, and its hotel stronghold.

...

Along the eastern border of the battle the Soviets have taken control of a small hamlet. Squinting out into the fading daylight they glimpse the silhouettes of tanks gliding towards them. From out of the twilight hours the tanks tear across the bridge and into the hamlet. Mass battles erupt, with Soviets jumping from open windows onto German tanks, and detonating satchel charges. Soviet armor quickly scrambles into place, and seals the German advance into the hamlet. However, it will take quite a while to clear the town of Nazi infiltrators.

Along the river another battle rages. Darkness is falling fast and from the evening sky planes tear through the winds. Screaming and howling they spray bullets at helpless ground targets and each other. Spinning wreckage hurtles from its heavenly origins and crashes into the earth, leaving smoking craters in its wake.

...

The bridge of sorrows is the location for some of the heaviest fighting. Explosions rock the ground as tanks and men pour in from both sides. The zing of bullets fills the air and corpses fall upon the ground and into the water. The sands run red as the Soviets push the German attacks back. Soon the Germans are thrown from the gates, and retreat to regroup.

As the sun sets over the battlefield it lights up the sky a brilliant shade of crimson. War has come and gone from these blood soaked fields. The Soviet army, with its numerical superiority pushed the German army back once again. The dead are laid to rest in mass graves, with no time to bury them properly. Soviet and German alike join each other in the cold hard ground, united on in death. The war is in its late stages now, and all seems lost for the Germans. Will we see a change with the dawn of a new day? Only time will tell…

Hill 253.5, 40 miles north of Kursk, July 9th, 1943

Operation Citadel had begun, but instead of the desired lightning breakthough, the fighting had taken on the characteristics of World War I trench warfare. In four days of grueling combat the XLI Panzer Corps had managed to penetrate the defenses of the Soviet 13th Army to a depth of only about five miles. The Corps, now being slowly forced onto the defensive by increasing enemy pressure, needed to secure a strong position on which to anchor its left flank and free its mobile elements;such a spot was the commanding height of Hill 253.5 near the village of Ponyri, where some of the most intensive fighting of the entire Eastern campaign was taking place. One July 9th the Germans stormed and captured Hill 239.8 and to exploit this success an assault on Hill 253.5 was ordered.

Aftermath: The German units, decimated and exhausted by five days of incessant fighting, attacked doggedly but didn't have the strength to seize or hold the hill. The panzergrenadiers were soon actually on the defensive as continuous Soviet counterattacks forced the Germans to employ their last reserves simply to hold their own positions.

Storm of steel

Report after Battle 14

In the fading light of the blood red sun they say you can see the truth in a mans eyes. The only truth here is one of quite desperation, and of hunger and of burning hatred. The Germans have amassed a sufficient number of troops to establish a defense again the encroaching Soviet horde. With a steely gaze, and steady hands they prepare to meet their salvation, or their doom.

It is a cool summer night; the moon has risen to its zenith, and casts pale shadows out upon the landscape. Within two conclaves of houses armies gather. The Soviets approaching from the north, and the Nazis to the south. A breeze flows over the field, stirring up leaves and men’s spirits. Both sides know the grim task that lies ahead of them.

...

The howl of engines is heard rumbling through the trees, chilling men’s hearts. Birds take off from their trees, knowing all to well what is about to happen. The Soviet army rushes to take control of a small town to the west, an old post office and a nice hotel complex to the east. The Germans take a barn, and a small set of buildings to the south. Tank shells fly over the ground, shrieking towards their targets. Chunks of ground are thrown up with bodies as the shells impact in soft earth and soft flesh.

And out of the night come the troops. Fierce and terrible, they rush in with the fury of a thousand demons. The Soviet defends howl their cries of defiance and rush to meet the German charge. Mp40 and PPSH shots fill the air, as blood is shed over virgin ground. The post office becomes hell on earth, with endless captures and recaptures. Fire rains from the sky, smashing dreams and men alike.

...

The German advance pushes against every Soviet position. The Soviets are driven out numerous times, only to return in force to retake their positions. Blood stains the ground, and runs freely through the buildings. Tank battles roar across the barren wasteland, twisted pieces of metal dotting the countryside.

In the end however the Germans are routed. The price in blood is far to high and they are forced to withdraw with the hopes they can establish a new defense. The crunching march to Berlin continues, as the Soviets draw ever closer…

Storm of Steel, Near Maloarkhangelsk, Kursk, Russia, 5th July, 1943

The opening of Operation Citadel came as no surprise since both sides had been building up their forces for weeks. The first task facing the German assault was to break through the heavily defended Soviet lines. The Soviet positions, containing six defensive belts, were strong and deep. In front of each belt of strong points were vast mine-fields averaging 5,000 mines per mile of front. The strongholds themselves contained anti-tank guns and ditches, pillboxes and entrenchments. At the road junction of Maloarkhangelsk, the experienced Wurttemburg Regiments of the 216th Division were hurled against the Soviet wall with the objective of cracking these formidable defences. To aid their breakthrough attempt, the Wurttemburgers were reinforced with assault guns and the new Ferdinand tanks, as well as with flamethrowing engineers. In the morning hours of the 5th, the Ferdinands began to rumble forwards in a storm of steel.

Aftermath: In order to blaze a trail for their tanks and infantry, the Germans employed a special vehicle known as the B-IV. Akin to the Bren Carriers, they were driven to the edges of minefields where they would set off a 1,000 pound charge, blowing large gaps through the minefields. The German forces ground forward, the the Soviet infantry, trained for weeks in anti-tank tactics, refused to panic. From their camouflaged foxholes, the Russians allowed the panzers to pass and stopped the German infantry. By evening, the Germans realised that despite their initial success against stubbornly defended positions, there would be no penetration in this defensive zone.

German night fighters

Report after Battle 13

Frozen desolate wasteland, that’s what one can consider the Russian steppes as. Gale force winds sweep the wide barren area, pushing through the forests and snow with a howl. The German army, now in retreat has set up a defensive line, preparing to counter attack. The Soviets, fresh off their victory at Stalingrad have chased the Axis army out into the steppes. Through the lost mountains, they are all so far away from home, to be lost here is to be lost forever.

The battle line has been drawn, the Soviets taking a small ruined villa in the south east, along with a small forward base camp. The Axis have taken a small village smack in the middle of the battlefield, and a second town to the south west, each side wants the northern encampment, but how much are they willing to pay to get it?

...

With a roar both sides rush out of their bases towards the north. The boom of tank shells sends jeeps overturning and men to hell. The Soviets manage to reach the encampment first, setting up a defensive perimeter. The Axis army is not far behind, and smashes into their hasty defense. Tracer fire burns hot towards the night sky, and a blood red moon. Bodies fall back into the snow, never to rise again. Tanks quickly ride in to join the battle. The whistle of tank shells fills the air, and battle is joined between the iron titans. It is suffocating madness around the northern encampment, smoke and screams fill the air. In the end the Soviets manage to come out on top, placing their flag in the bodies of the fallen.

In the south, Nazi charges into the ruined villa are more successful. Coming through the southern forests they manage to sneak up on the Soviet defenders. As gunfire fills the air both sides duck into cover, hoping not to become the next victim. The Axis manage to drive back the Soviets, taking control of the villa. However, the Soviets are not keen to loosing their territory, and quickly push the Axis back, reclaiming what is theirs.

...

Across the sweeping madness of the battlefield the tanks are the most important element. Russian T34s square off against German Panzer 4s in a titanic clash to the death. Through the howling madness the sounds of explosions and screams can be heard. Twisted metal crunches into the ground, along with mangled human remains. Warrior soldiers forever, they have gone to meet their maker. In the end, the Russian tanks have superior speed and manage to push back the Germans.

The Germans are once again in full retreat. The dead litter the ground, but for the victors it is to tiresome a duty to clean them up. So the dead are left where they fall, to slowly decompose in the winter conditions, and return as we all must some day to the earth. The Soviets wearily pack up their gear and trudge onwards, towards the ultimate goal…Berlin…

The panzergrenadiers were soon actually on the defensive as continuous Soviet counterattacks forced the Germans to employ their last reserves simply to hold their own positions.

BY Targetpractise: The Germans felt it was time to give a blow to the tide of the Russian forces. By 1943 the Germans started by sending by which time they had collected 200 of the new Panther tanks, 90 Elefant Panzerjägers, every flyable Henschel Hs 129 ground attack aircraft, as well as 270 Tiger Is, late model Panzer IVs and even a number of captured T-34s. This totaled to some 2,700 and assault guns, 1,800 aircraft, and 800,000 men. It formed one of the greatest concentrations of German fighting power ever put together and the Russians noticed this with high level of urgency. By 1943 the Soviet air forces outnumbered the Luftwaffe and threated to gain full air supriority. By January the 6th Army had surrendered and the Hungarian 2nd Army had been completely wiped out. Kharkov, which was retaken 16 February 1943 and in order to save the position in the South, the decision was taken in February to abandon the Rzhev salient, letting enough enough German troops to make a successful offensive in eastern Ukraine. Manstein's counter-attack, supported by a specially trained SS Panzer Corps equipped with Tiger tanks, commenced on 20 February 1943, and fought its way from Poltava back into Kharkov in the third week of March completing the mission with only 5% of its forces left. Upon which the Spring thaw intervened. This had left a glaring bulge in the front, centered around Kursk.

Defend Stalingrad or die for mother Russia!

Report after Battle 10

Stalingrad, a city of steel and blood. A Soviet bastion of defense in a world of sorrow and misery. The darkness has come to Stalingrad’s doorstep. The German army, fresh from its victories elsewhere have stormed past Stalingrad’s perimeter defenses and have entered the city itself. The Soviet defenders gaze out with misty eyes on the grey tide that has dared to defile their city. As the time of reckoning approaches the Soviets can do nothing but watch as the Germans prepare for their assault.

With the sound of a horn, and a rush of wind the Germans rush to their kubelwagons and sally forth to swamp the Soviet defenses. The Soviets rush to their battle stations, throwing out mines and manning machineguns. Thunderous booms ring out as the Germans run into the minefields, throwing burning bodies and scrap metal all over the streets.

...

Red Square if quickly taken, its few defenders quickly over run. Gun battles begin as running battles break out in the streets back to the train station. Soviet riflemen make the Germans pay for every step forward. However, the Germans are far to numerous, and pour into the train station. The air is filled with streams of hot lead, and screams. The streets run red with blood of the attackers and defenders. The train station is overrun slowly but surely by the flow of German reinforcements.

The tractor factory is another kingpin in the defense of Stalingrad. At the factory the Soviets are better prepared. Explosive packs are laid, mines are ready and Soviet rifles cocked and loaded. The German offense is blunted, and turned back all together many times. They just keep pouring in however, and with the onset of armored support the whole area is turned into a giant killing ground. The factory changes hands numerous times, and is in a perpetual state of indecision about who its new master should be.

...

In the forests on the outskirts of Stalingrad the story is different. On the western flank the sawmill is quickly overrun by consolidated German pushes. Despite heavy attempts the Soviets are incapable of retaking it. The orchards of fruit trees and fields of wheat are filled with rotting bodies, and rusting metal.

Stalingrad appears to be falling to the Germans. The grey tide sweeps through the city, killing, maiming, and being killed in turn. But there is still much fighting to be done, and a new wave of Soviet reinforcements gathers in the distance. Will they be able to turn the tide? In time, we shall see.

Red Barricades, Stalingrad, November 11th, 1942

For over two months the Germans had been trying to wrest control of the ruined city from their foe. For several days an uncanny lull had descended upon the moonscape-like battlefield, each side licking its wounds and preparing for yet another round of bludgeoning.

For the Germans, time was running out. Paulus, commander of the German 6th Army, was worried not only by ominous reports of increasing enemy activity on his flanks north and south of the city, but also about the inevitable onset of another Russian winter.

So far, the Germans had managed to squeeze the Russian 62nd Army into a sliver of riverbank a mere 10km long by 1.5km deep. Hoping that one last great push might be enough to finally shatter all organised resistance in the city, German assault troops prepared for a final onslaught. In the meantime, fresh Pioneer battalions specially trained in urban warfare were flown in, to be supported by a dozen experimental assault guns boasting a 150mm gun. Each frontline German division formed a Sturmkompanie comprised of 150 select men heavily laden with automatic weapons.

The Russians, discerning the Germans' intentions, busily braced for the expected encounter, turning every pile of rubble and blasted building they still held into a formidable fortress. On November 11th daybreak came early at 0300 hours as a heavy fusilade of German artillery shells lit up the night, to open the final bid to capture the city.

Report after Battle 9

A warm summers breeze fills the air. Rostov, a quite town sitting at the edge of a flowing blue river. However, this will not remain. War has reached out with its clammy hand and reached around this once peaceful villa. The Nazi army hoping to penetrate this bastion of defense has come in force to lay siege to the city.

On the warm outer banks the Soviets muster their defenses. An industrial complex overlooks the city, and a small island of defense rests off its shoreline. Here the Soviets draw their line, knowing that if the enemy breeches into the city it will already be to late.

...

With a roar of smoke and steel the Axis armored division rides out to crush the Soviets. The air is filled with the hum of motors as both sides air force meets in a dance of death hundreds of feet above the ground. Crouched in shelled out remains of a once great city the Soviets can only wait for the tide of grey to hit their lines.

The industrial complex, lacking armor support is quickly over run, its defenders hurling themselves on suicidal missions with satchel charges in a last ditch effort to halt the advancing Axis armor. But it was not to be, and they are quickly swept aside, their bodies sinking underneath the tank treads relentless march onwards.

The island fares better however. While the west side of the island stronghold is a constant battleground the east side manages to hold out, sending reinforcements into the hellish interior of the ravaged west side. Gun battles rage and tank shells turn buildings and men into pulp. The Nazi army pushes hundreds of men into the city, clogging the bridges in, and swimming across the river to reach the far bank.

...

The Soviets in time run out of capable men to reinforce the island, and it falls under Axis control. Falling back, and in disarray the Soviets have to few troops, to few planes, and to little time. Rostov falls within the hour, and the Nazi war machine stampedes from the island into the city like a force of nature. The flood of troops goes on seemingly without end.

As the sun falls, and dusk approaches the Soviet flag is taken down and the new red and swastika is hoisted up. In the fading sunlight the flag swings, a symbol of another Nazi victory, and of Soviet retreat.

Battle 10: Drive through the suburbs, West of Stalingrad, August 23rd, 1942

By the end of August the 4th Army's northeastward advance against the city was converging with the eastward advance of the 6th Army, under General Friedrich Paulus, with 330,000 of the German Army's finest troops. The Red Army, however, put up the most determined resistance, yielding ground only very slowly and at a high cost as the 6th Army approached Stalingrad.

A member of the 24th Panzer Division, described his feelings: "We were the victors and, as we headed towards Stalingrad, we thought that we would capture the city in a few days. That was a mistake. The Russians who defended the city were brave, dogged and tough. We had heavy losses in men and equipment. The Russians had half-finished tanks, which they dug into the ground to fire at us. They fought us to the last man."

One such encounter occurred at "The Hospital", a small village in the suburbs of Stalingrad. With the Dubovaya Forest to the west, Hill 126.3 to the east, Hill 112.5 to the south and the Stalingradski airfield to the southeast elements of the Soviet army fought grimly, exacting a heavy price from the advancing German forces.

Aftermath: On August 23 a German spearhead penetrated the city's northern suburbs, and the Luftwaffe rained incendiary bombs that destroyed most of the city's wooden housing. The Soviet 62nd Army was pushed back into Stalingrad proper, where, under the command of Vasily I. Chuikov, it made a determined stand. Meanwhile, the Germans' concentration on Stalingrad was increasingly draining reserves from their flank cover, which was already strained by having to stretch so far 400 miles -640 km on the left (north), as far as Voronezh, 400 miles-640 km again on the right (south), as far as the Terek River (Caucasus).

By mid-September the Germans had pushed the Soviet forces in Stalingrad back until the latter occupied only a nine-mile-long strip of the city along the Volga, and this strip was only two or three miles wide. The Soviets had to supply their troops by barge and boat across the Volga from the other bank. At this point Stalingrad became the scene of some of the fiercest and most concentrated fighting of the war; streets, blocks, and individual buildings were fought over by many small units of troops and often changed hands again and again.

Wittmans Tiger at Kursk

Report after Battle 7

The silence is absolute, bar the howling wind. Darkness has fallen upon the land. The Allied and Axis armies have met again, this time near the town of Okorovovo. Upon a mountain of stone and soil sits a castle, its inhabitants long since fled, leaving it to the vines and wildlife. In the valley small hamlets dot the landscape, their dwellers cowering in fear. And along the water lays the port city, with a industrial complex.

Slowly the sun rises, warm rays of light spill out onto the land, and the sky lights up with a brilliant shade of orange. The winds and snow have ceased, leaving only wet men in their wake. As the sounds of groaning and the cracks of stiff joints fills the air officers begin to bellow out orders. Hurriedly men of both sides gather their weapons and mount up on their vehicles. The time of battle is upon them.

...

The Nazi army sallies forth across the only bridge out of town, crossing the freezing river below them. The Soviets likewise pour from their camp in the foothills. The lines are drawn quickly, with the Soviets taking control of the hamlet, industrial storage facility and decaying castle. Not to be outdone the Axis army takes control of the main industrial complex and bridge crossing. Roaring steel rides out from the Nazis and strikes the unprepared Soviet army with the white hot fury of a thousand suns. The Soviets howl in defiance as the two sides meet. Bullets zing through the air, burning across the frozen landscape. Along the frigid river the Axis send out quickly constructed wooden boats to watch the shores. Soviet spies in the Nazi camp cause mayhem and destruction. However the Soviets are quickly pushed out of their control points. Rockets roar down from the sky, turning men into ash, tanks into twisted scrap heaps and hopes into dreams.

...

The tides have shifted, and the once white landscape runs red with blood. The Soviets have been crushed. What once was can never be again, and this once peaceful land has tasted blood. It’s a taste that will not soon be forgotten…

As a final note an entire company of Nazi troops was captured in the Russian retreat. They have been re-educated to fight for the Soviet cause now. On the flip side a Soviet captain and his lieutenant were also captured, and have decided to fight for the Nazis. How will this affect the war? Only time will tell.

Battle 8: Operation Störfang and Trappenjagd, Crimea, May 8th, 1942

The Black Sea port of Sevastopol was a heavily defended fortress on the Crimean peninsula. German and Romanian troops had advanced to the outskirts of the city from the North and launched their attack on 30 October 1941. Having failed to take the city, Axis forces began a siege and heavy bombardment. A second Axis offensive against the city, launched in December 1941, failed as well, as the Soviet army and navy forces continued to fight fiercely. In addition to Sevastopol's defenders, three Soviet armies with seventeen rifle divisions, two cavalry divisions, three rifle brigades and four tank brigades barricaded the narrow, eighteen kilometer Parpach Isthmus, the access road from the Crimea to the Kerch Peninsula.

Kerch on the other hand was a springboard across to the eastern Black Sea coast and thus to the approaches to the Caucasus. Each kilometer of this vital bridge was defended by about 10.000 Soviet soldiers, ten men to every meter. When one is facing an enemy three times as strong in a clever defensive position, one can only prevail with courage and cunning, and Manstein and his Axis forces proved to be up to the task.

Aftermath: By May 16 three Soviet armies, 170.000 soldiers had been smashed in eight days by a half-dozen German divisions. Before them lay the sea, the Straits of Kerch, and beyond, not twenty kilometers away, the shore of the Taman Peninsula, the approach to Asia, the entrance to the Caucasus. Manstein's victory had kicked open the backdoor to Stalin's oil paradise. Following on from this, the city of Sevastopol was taken in June 1942. It was liberated in bloody fighting in May 1944. Sevastopol was awarded the title Hero City in 1945.
